noticeable. i was at the summit when kimjong—un met noticeable. i was at the summit when kim jong—un met the south korean leader, and he looked very relaxed. they could speak the same language and they came from the same culture. they seemed to strike up a rapport quickly when they met at the demarcation line, going to the north, then back to the south. they we re north, then back to the south. they were at ease quickly. this seemed... ido were at ease quickly. this seemed... i do not want to cast too much conjecture, but kim jong—un looked a bit nervous, not making eye contact with donald trump. we do not know how much english he speaks. it is a bit difficult to immediately have a rapport when you are speaking to someone rapport when you are speaking to someone without the same language.

korean delegation and the american delegation. rupert, you made the point, and perhaps, for me, it sums up point, and perhaps, for me, it sums up the awkwardness, there is a language barrier, given the fact kim jong—un cannot speak fluent english. there is a slight delay in their conversation. this 45 minutes, 60 minutes, of one—on—one time they are now spending together is a very short amount of time if you speak the same language. for two leaders to have a one on one of one hour on their first meeting, that is not much time to get much to be going backwards and forwards, i have interviews around the world, sometimes it takes three times as long to do that interview when it has to go back and forwards through translation all the time. that will hinder their ability to get much done. and also to build up immediate

rapport. as far as we know, what is happening at the moment now, we understand perhaps that this is the start of the expanded bilateral talks between the two. my understanding is that begins in half an hour. i think they will have this not so brief one—on—one with just the translators present. and then it will be expanded to bring in senior officials before a working lunch. expectations have been rolled back

businessman, he is looking for his eyes. i will begin to see where this goes and what they talk about later. very little eye contact between the two men, very much looking ahead at the people taking the photos. more interested looking straightforward. for me, robert, i wonder if you agree with this assessment, the enormity of this event, perhaps dawning on them now as they look slightly uncomfortable. six months ago it was to card and all the rest of it, six months ago we were talking about nuclear war on the peninsular and this is a rapid turnaround, one of the concerns about the analyst community's opinion, swinging dramatically. a month ago we were talking about donald trump getting a nobel prize and now we're talking about this being a get—to—know—you meeting and the beginning of the processed. it would help us keep our bearings if this proceeded in a slower more organised manner than these wide

swings. now we look at the body language, we look at the handshake and the eye contact, but it will be about detail, what the two are able to really come away with here, denuclearisation on the table, lifting sanctions for north korea, but whatever happens moving on, we can't underestimate how significant this moment is for a nation that's never previously engaged with the west in this way, never engaged with america, who's always been seen as the archenemy. symbolism is really important in north korea. they need to explain to its people why they live in this backward state, north koreans know what south korea is like so ideology is important. we know that him getting the handshake and standing in front of the two flags is a big deal. the flags is important. that symbolises recognition. quite something to have equal recognition. the two of them

standing there and shaking hands. you mention the word statesmanlike, thatis you mention the word statesmanlike, that is the image they want the world to see them. and the view from washington and joining us is a research associate at the centre for international security studies at maryland. naoko aoki. what are you making of this moment? it is very historic and it is unprecedented. irony hope that there will be positive results out of it. —— i really hope. we've talked about of course the technical details which have been a little short on coming forward in terms of what we know the two men are going to discuss, what is your assessment now when we look at the concrete detail of what will unfold in the coming hours of what's likely to happen today? i think an outcome that is positive but still realistic would include two elements in a statement

by the two leaders that would be denuclearisation and a fundamental change in the relationship between the two countries. that would start a process for further diplomacy that would find a way to get there. naoko aoki, i wanted to ask you as well, conversation, of course, as we go into the details, but we mustn't forget the human rights record of north korea, the regime, are you getting a sense that that may well be brought up here? we haven't had any conversation leading up to this about... even from the briefing from mike pompeo, the us secretary of state, no mention of the human rights abuses of north korea. is it likely to come up do you think?|j don't likely to come up do you think?” don't see any signs that would be a major element in the current

productive relationship between the us and russia in the time since. personal relationships can make a big difference. that's what donald trump i5 big difference. that's what donald trump is certainly banking on today. but it's not necessarily the case. this is a very, very difficult, very complicated and very long relationship with these two countries, hostility the5e relationship with these two countries, hostility these two countries, hostility these two countries have. we've sort of nine for a long time what the outline of any agreement between these two countries would be, denuclearisation in return for security guarantees, recognition, peace treaty and economic assistance. that's been on the table for at least 30 years. but there massive, ma55ive di5trust particularly on the part of the north korean leadership. rightly or wrongly it believes the us wants regime change, it wants to get rid of the kim regime and in the end once to get rid of the existence of north korea and have a reunified

korea on bbc news. more to come live on bbc news. i'm babita sharma from singapore. stay with us. hello there. for many days, even weeks now, our weather has been stuck in a rut. long spell5 of warm sunshine, and just the odd thunderstorm. but, at long last, things are changing. you may not like the change because fir5tly we're bringing some cooler air in from the north. and then, from the atlantic, through the middle part of the week, we're going to bring quite an active frontal system, an area of low pressure, that will bring some wet and very windy weather, particularly across the north. that will be a bit of a shock to the system. but the changes are already under way. some cooler conditions through the day ahead. quite a lot of cloud around as well. that cloud will break up through the day, so we will see some spell5 of sunshine. the best of these likely to be found acro55 parts of wales and the south—west. equally, just the odd scattered shower5, but those temperatures down on where they have been.

highs of between 15 and 21 degrees. no more mid—205. now, during tuesday night, we'll see a mixture of clear skies and patchy cloud. it should stay just about dry. it's going to turn into a relatively cool night. temperatures in quite a few places should get down into single digits. we go into wednesday and we start off on a fine note, but frontal systems approaching from the north—west. more on that in a moment. we start wednesday, though, with high pressure across the british isles. so actually not a bad start to the day. good spell5 of the shine to be had. perhaps just the odd shower breaking out as cloud builds up through the day. but, up to the north—west, you will already have spotted this. quite a significant change. rain into northern ireland, western scotland by the end of the day. strengthening wind5 as well. and as we go through wednesday night, a spell of very disturbed weather. very heavy rain pushing in from the west. really strong winds as well. wind gu5t5 ea5ily 40—50mph. but perhaps through the central belt, tho5e wind gu5t5 as strong a5 60 mph. we will keep you posted on that forecast for wednesday night into thursday.
